Conversations on Design: Shalini Misra and Rafael Martinez of Interior Design Manila

JANUARY 31, 2024

To celebrate the debut of our exclusive rug collection, inspired by the historic stepwells of India and crafted by Interior Design Manila, we hosted an engaging dialogue with Shalini Misra and Rafael Martinez, the distinguished founder of Interior Design Manila. This discussion delved into the cultural significance of stepwells, the creative journey behind the collection, and the intricate craftsmanship that makes each rug unique.

Shalini, what led you to draw inspiration from the stepwells of India?

The stepwells of India, known as ‘Vav’ or ‘Baoli,’ are integral to the country’s rich cultural and architectural history. These structures, originally designed for water collection and spiritual gatherings, provided essential shelter and protection, especially for women. Their profound historical and cultural significance deeply inspired me to incorporate their essence into this rug collection.

Why did you choose Interior Design Manila for the production of these exclusive rugs?

Interior Design Manila was selected due to its exceptional dedication to both craftsmanship and sustainability. Their expertise in working with high-quality natural materials and traditional handmade techniques aligns seamlessly with the vision for this collection. Their commitment to social and environmental responsibility, reflected in initiatives such as community education, also aligns with the values we uphold at Curio.

Rafael, can you describe the rug production process and any unique techniques involved?

Our production process centers around the traditional hand-knotting technique, a method traditionally used in the Middle East, India, and China. Every stage, from material processing to dyeing, is meticulously handled in-house. Each rug can feature up to 232,000 knots per square meter, showcasing the detailed craftsmanship involved. The finishing touches, including hand-cutting and embossing, ensure that each piece meets our high standards of quality.

How long does it take to complete each rug, and how many artisans contribute to its creation?

The creation of each rug spans between 14 to 17 weeks. A skilled team of artisans works collaboratively throughout the process, ensuring that every rug reflects our dedication to quality and sustainable practices.

How were the stepwells’ designs translated into the rugs?

The intricate designs of the Indian stepwells are depicted in the rugs through delicate gradients of hand-dyed Himalayan wool. Our artisans in Manila use varying pile heights and textures to emulate the architectural depth and elaborate carvings of the stepwells, resulting in a piece that is both visually and texturally rich.

With sustainability being a major focus, how does Interior Design Manila practice responsible design?

Interior Design Manila is committed to sustainability through the use of ethically sourced materials and eco-friendly production practices. This includes plastic-free packaging and efforts towards carbon neutrality. Our commitment extends to supporting local artisans through educational initiatives, reflecting our broader goals of responsible design.

Shalini, what does this collection represent for Interior Design Manila?

This collection highlights the talent and dedication of Manila-based artisans and emphasizes our commitment to showcasing culturally significant designs. It underscores our mission to promote under-represented artists and deliver unique, impactful pieces to a global audience.

Do you each have a favorite piece from the collection?

Shalini: Each rug is unique, but I have a particular fondness for the Ujala rug, which captures the stepwell’s arch-shaped niches beautifully. The contrasting blue and grey tones add a distinctive element.

Rafael: It’s difficult to choose just one. Each rug has its own personality. Collaborating closely with Shalini allowed us to bring the essence of the stepwells to life in each design. I am incredibly satisfied with the final result.
